Get involved with our Community Groups

The Armed Forces Community HQ (AFCHQ) hosts a variety of community groups that you could get involved with. Everything from tabletop war gaming to going for walks around the local area, there is something for everyone. All the AFCHQ’s community groups are listed below.

Monday March

Held on Monday 11:00-15:00

On a Monday one of our very talented walk leaders hosts a beginner’s level walk around our local area. This can be anywhere between 3 and 6 miles with lots of beautiful photo opportunities making it the perfect opportunity to crack out your camera.

 

Naafi café

Held on Monday, Friday and the last Saturday of the month 10:30-13:00

Every Monday, Friday and last Saturday of the month our lovely kitchen staff open up the doors to our Naafi café which offers by far the cheapest brew and barm in town. All our lovely staff, volunteers and service users would love to see you, come down and have a chat.

Health and Well Being Group

Held on Monday 11:00-16:00

The health and wellbeing group which is run by one of our fabulous volunteers is another group to get involved with. Simply come down to the HQ between 11:00-13:00, get yourself a brew and make some friends.

 

Models for heroes

held on Monday 12:00-16:00

Our Models for heroes’ group is a great group you could get involved with. If you have a model you need help with, bring it to the group and one of our very talented modellers will give you all the tips and tricks you need. Models can be provided for blue light and veterans only.


Female support group

held on Monday Evening 18:00-19:30

The women’s support group offers you the opportunity to come together and listen to other women’s experiences and share your own if you wish to. The group is a great way to reducing stress and tackle loneliness, learn new coping mechanisms and ways of dealing with everyday issues which will help you feel more confident in yourself.


Community garden

The community Garden is open on Tuesday and Thursday 11:00-13:00 at the Gordon Street Community Garden Wigan, WN1 3DF

Run by two of our volunteers, the community garden is a therapeutic experience and a great place to spend time in the community whilst helping to plant and develop the area.


Molyneux Community Collective Board Games

Held on Tuesday 11:00-15:00

The Molyneux Community Collective hold a board game group where everyone is welcome. We have a large selection to choose from or you can bring your favourite game along to share with others. Why not come down and give it a try? It’s a great place to meet new people with a brew and friendly atmosphere.


Veterans peer support group

Held on Wednesday evening 18:00-19:30

Come down to the HQ and join in our veteran’s peer support group. The group is aimed at veterans and is a great way to have a brew and take a load off amongst your newfound friends. The group is self-facilitated and works towards a collective improvement of everyday lives.


Wargaming

Held on Thursday 11:00 – 16:00

This group is a tabletop war gaming experience each week re-enacting different battles in WWII. It’s open to all the members of the community and our very talented volunteers who run the group are more than happy to teach new members the art of tabletop gaming.


Sup it and see

Held on Thursday 11:00-14:00

Yet another community social group that you could get involved with, Sup it and see is hosted by one of our volunteers and aims to have a different activity each week. Activities such as crochet and writing skills are available so there is something for everyone to get stuck in with.


MCC Arts and craft

Held on Friday 11:00-15:00 

The Arts and craft group has a variety of supplies from card making to painting and colouring. The group offers a friendly environment and great activities to help you to meet new people and combat social isolation. The group have raised money for the HQ and the RBL through sales of the products they have made. The MCC has also hosted ticketed events such as the tea dance and Halloween party for the whole community to enjoy.

Recycling minds

Held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday Morning of every month from 10:00 onwards

The cycling group for over 18’s is a beginner level group that completes excursions around the Wigan area. Come along, get socialising and have some fun and wonderful fresh air.

The Cunning Stunts

Death-defying dad and daughter danger double act with an appetite for absurdity, the Cunning Stunts, consisting of freak fatale Eve Elle and moustachioed mad man Baldini, have performed, and produced, shows from Stoke-on-Trent to Singapore. With their tongue-in-cheek approach to the art of circus and sideshow, this dynamic duo will entertain you like never before. Having graced the Sindrome stage at Download Festival as well as the Caravan of Lost Souls at Glasto, Cirque Du Mort in Glasgow, nightclubs in Dubai, weddings in Delhi, Formula One Silverstone, Abu Dhabi and Monaco, and many more, they are absolutely THRILLED to be joining an incredible line-up for ‘A Million Veteran Dreams’ this summer.

Mackenzie

Mackenzie Clifford specialises in Aerial Silks , Lyra , Pole and Flypole. She has won awards in numerous competitions including UKAPC, IPAAT and Dance Equality Aerial and Acro. Mackenzie is an experienced performer, working at events including Shakespeares birthday celebration in Stratford-upon-Avon, and performing aerial acts across the country with Birminghams Youth Circus, as well as working in theatres and with community events. Mackenzie is a full time aerial and Pole instructor, working out of Polefit & Aerialfit Crewe & Stoke-on-Trent. 
 

Luke Harries

 Luke Harries is internationally recognised for his acrobatic Cyr Wheel act, performing at some of top known resorts across the Maldives.With over a decade of experience performing at some of the largest festivals in the UK, at Weddings, corporate functions and huge public events, this high impact performance has wowed many a crowd, showcasing an extreme level of talent. Well known by the performance community for both his Cyr Wheel, LED and fire shows, Luke is also highly regarded for ability to produce and choreograph high-end visual group performances

Lauren Eve

Lauren Eve is a singer, originally from Manchester but now living in Lytham St. Anne’s. She attended a music college in Manchester and studied vocal performance. Her favourite place to sing is on the streets of Altrincham as she loves busking!. So far her biggest achievement was to perform at the London Palladium in 2022 at Britain’s Got Talent and got 4 yes’. The best is yet to come…… 

Raphael

Raphael has over 12 years’ experience in the music industry, theatre and music production having worked with Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith, Olly Murs, Alexander O’Neal, and has appeared on television shows, The X Factor UK, The Voice and The Graham Norton Show. His music is guaranteed to bring the fun, great vocals, and a high-energy performance style to every show

Adam

Adam Thornewill AKA Miss Diva Dib Dab is an international drag queen. Starting as a dancer, the joining a circus company performing stilt walking, fire skills and angle grinding.
