Three Wigan Borough cadet units have each received £500 to turn their community project ideas into action following the first borough-wide Future Forces & Blue Light Youth Expo.
Representatives from the winning units visited Molyneux House on Tuesday 8 September to celebrate their success and receive a share of £1,500 in project funding.
The winning units were:
- Wigan Grenadier Guards Detachment, 5 Company Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force
- 316 (Leigh) Squadron RAF Air Cadets
- Wigan Sea Cadets
The cadets secured the funding after presenting their ideas through a Dragon’s Den-style community project competition at the Expo. The challenge gave young people an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, leadership and commitment to making a positive difference in their communities.
The Future Forces & Blue Light Youth Expo brought together cadet forces, emergency-service cadet organisations, education providers and community partners from across Wigan Borough. Through interactive activities and presentations, it showcased the wide range of opportunities available to young people aged 12 to 18.
Cadet membership helps young people develop confidence, resilience, discipline, teamwork and communication skills. It can also support their education, employability and future career choices while giving them opportunities to serve their communities and form lasting friendships.
The Expo also highlighted the vital contribution made by adult volunteers. From leading activities and sharing specialist skills to providing encouragement and practical support, volunteers make local cadet experiences possible. A range of training and personal-development opportunities is available, and previous military or emergency-service experience is not required for many roles.
Young people interested in joining a cadet unit, and adults who would like to volunteer, are encouraged to explore the opportunities available locally.
Following the success of the inaugural event, the Future Forces & Blue Light Youth Expo will return bigger and better during Cadet Forces Week in October 2027. Further details will be announced nearer the time.
