Served in the Armed Forces? Discover How AFCHQ Can Support You and Your Family

If you or someone in your family has served in the Armed Forces, you may be entitled to more support than you realise.

On 9th September, Armed Forces Community HQ (AFCHQ) will be at Leigh Library from 1:00pm–3:00pm, giving veterans and their families the opportunity to meet the team, have an informal conversation and discover the support available to them.

Whether you’re struggling with your mental health, worried about money, looking for work, experiencing housing difficulties or simply feel like you could do with someone in your corner, come and speak to us. But you don’t need to know exactly what support you need before you arrive.

The event is an opportunity to find out more about AFCHQ, ask questions and understand what support may be available for you or someone in your family.

AFCHQ provides trusted, community-based support for people across the Armed Forces community, including those who are currently serving, have previously served, or support someone who has.

Our approach is about looking at the person as a whole. Instead of expecting you to navigate multiple organisations and services alone, we can help you understand your options, access appropriate support and take the next step.

Here are just five of the ways we can help.

1. Wellbeing and Mental Health Support

You don’t have to wait until you’re at crisis point to ask for help.

AFCHQ provides support for people experiencing mental health and emotional wellbeing challenges, including access to counselling and therapeutic support, crisis intervention and trauma-informed, peer-led conversations.

For some people, that might mean getting help following a particularly difficult period. For others, it might simply mean having somewhere they feel safe enough to talk.

Whatever you’re experiencing, you deserve to feel heard and understood.

2. Support for You and Your Family

Military life doesn’t only affect the person wearing the uniform.

Partners, children, parents and carers can all experience challenges associated with service, transition to civilian life, caring responsibilities and changes within family life.

That’s why AFCHQ’s support extends across the wider Armed Forces community.

Our team can listen to what’s happening within your family, help identify where additional support may be useful and connect you with appropriate services.

3. Employment, Skills and Financial Support

Leaving the Armed Forces or experiencing a change in circumstances can bring practical challenges too.

You may be trying to find your next job, work out how your military experience translates into civilian employment, develop new skills or deal with increasing financial pressure.

AFCHQ can provide support around employment and training pathways, welfare and benefits, debt and financial guidance, and accessing appropriate statutory services.

The aim isn’t simply to solve today’s problem. It’s to help you build greater stability and confidence for the future.

4. Housing and Homelessness Support

Having somewhere safe and stable to live can underpin almost every other area of your life.

If you’re worried about your housing situation, facing homelessness or struggling to maintain your current accommodation, AFCHQ can help.

Support can include homelessness prevention and advocacy, emergency and temporary accommodation, and help establishing sustainable tenancies. You don’t have to wait until you’ve lost your home before reaching out.

5. Recovery, Connection and Belonging

Sometimes the thing that’s missing isn’t easy to put into words. You might have somewhere to live and a job but still feel isolated, disconnected or unsure of where you belong after service.

AFCHQ is about more than accessing individual services. We’re also a community. Through social activities, peer-support groups, volunteering and opportunities to get involved, we help people rebuild connections and become part of something again.

Our focus is on outcomes that last: improved wellbeing, reduced isolation, increased stability and renewed hope.

Not Sure Whether You Need Support? Come and Talk to Us

You don’t need to decide which of these categories you fit into. Real life rarely fits neatly into one box. Housing difficulties can affect mental health. Financial pressure can affect relationships. Isolation can make everything else feel harder.

AFCHQ takes a holistic approach, working alongside partners across health, housing, employment and community services to help people access coordinated support.

So, if you have served in the Armed Forces, or you’re the family member or carer of someone who has, come and meet us at Leigh Library on 9th September.

You can ask questions, find out what’s available and have a conversation with someone who understands the Armed Forces community.
